Hello lovelies
At the academy, I enjoy guiding many newcomers through their metal clay learning process.
So I thought it would be useful to share some of the pearls of wisdom in a regular back to basic blog, for everyone starting their metal clay journey!
Today I thought it would be good to cover the basic tool kit. One of the many things I love about this marvellous material is that we don’t need lots of big expensive tools to create beautiful jewellery.
I put together a little list with basic tools for you:
Basic beginner tool kit
A non-stick work surface such a teflon sheet.
A plastic or clear acrylic roller.
Something to keep your clay at an even consistency. Such as playing cards, spacer bars, or rolling frames.
A release agent such as badger balm or a little olive oil.
A couple of small pots or little squirty bottles for water
A paintbrush
A toothpick ( for hole making/sanding)
A scalpel/ cutting tool
Some textures ( Fabric and wallpaper samples are great free options, mini cutters,
Sanding pads
Metal clay ( THIS HELPS FOR SURE!) I love Art Clay personally but there are lots of other brands out there
Firing equipment, a blow torch & fibre brick or a stainless steel mesh to place on top of a hob or a kiln
A wire brush ( brass or steel)
And polishing cloth- (I love pro polishing cloths)
Here in the UK my personal go to supplier is Metal Clay Ltd but would love to hear recommendations from across the globe for other suppliers to help everyone starting out as to where to get their equipment from.
I would love to know what’s in your basic tool kit to? Comment below with your go too tools for everyone to see.
Please do feel free to pop a little comment below of all of your burning beginner questions and I will add them to my list to answer over the coming weeks!
Best wishes
Emma. X.
